'The Guard Dog' by Dick King-Smith

This charming little story is suitable for younger readers and is a nice introduction to the work of Dick-King Smith.

The scruffy little mongrel in the pet shop window has a grand ambition - to be a guard dog. The other pups laugh at him. How could such a small, scruffy dog with such a horrible bark ever expect to be chosen? Will the poor little guard dog be doomed to a lonely life in the Dog's Home - or worse?
