Primary Strategy Q&A

http://education.guardian.co.uk/talk
I've been asked to mention the online Q&A on the National Strategies that the Guardian newspaper is running this week. Paul Wagstaff, the national director for primary, and Nigel Bufton, the strategy's programme director of mathematics, will be live online on Friday December 15, from 12.30pm to 2pm, to answer your questions. I know that many of you will have other things to do at lunchtime but if you visit the site now you can leave your question for them to answer tomorrow.

Exploratorium

http://www.exploratorium.edu/
This museum of science, art and human perception in the US has a great website. It's very easy to spend a lot of time exploring it! The site's Digital Library has an interesting collection of photographs as well as a searchable database of mathematics activities. There's an online exhibition of optical illusions and even a complete fun science book (which is really useful when you're looking at instructions).

Ancient Civilisations

http://www.ancientcivilizations.co.uk
Students can explore and compare civilisations from the ancient world using this site from the British Museum. It's packed with objects, photographs and information on the themes of writing, buildings, cities, religion, trade and technology. The interface can be a little tricky to follow at times so the site would be best used with upper KS2 or in teacher led sessions with younger children.

Language of the Month

http://www.newburypark.redbridge.sch.uk/langofmonth/
This absolutely superb website has been produced by Newbury Park Primary School in Redbridge. It showcases the huge number of languages spoken in the school and provides a wonderful resource to promote language awareness.

Each language is demonstrated by one of the bilingual children at the school. You can listen to some simple everyday words, basic questions & answers and learn how to count from 1 to 12. There's also a section which gives a little information about where the language is spoken.

You can download each of the presentations or the associated audio files to use offline. There's also a resource pack for each language (which gives you everything you need to make a suitable wall display) as well as a great activity booklet with over a hundred ideas for promoting language awareness.

KS1 Christmas Resources

http://www.northpole.com/Overview/Teacher.html
There's some useful Christmas themed worksheets, suitable for Foundation and Key Stage 1 students, on this US site. They cover areas such as big/small, left/right, rhyming words and counting. There's dot to dot puzzles (using numbers and letters), wordsearches and mazes as well.

Ma & Pa Kettle Do Maths

My thanks go to Ann for pointing us in the direction of this great clip from one of the old "Ma and Pa Kettle" movies. It's the classic scene where they try and convince a business partner that 25 divided by 5 is 14. Upper KS2 students love it, especially when they realise that the family in the film make the same mistakes that they do!

Watch it on your favourite movie site... Google Video - You Tube - TV.com

(It's certainly one to share with older classes but please check the advertising and comments on the video pages (each time) before displaying it in school.)

BBC Motion Gallery

http://www.bbcmotiongallery.com
The BBC Motion Gallery contains a huge collection of film clips from not only the BBC but also CBS News (US), NHK (Japan) and ABC (Australia).
It's designed for media professions to use in order to obtain footage to use in adverts and corporate films but teachers will find the site extremely useful as well.
It's great for pulling up clips of certain subjects to use as inspiration in poetry or creative writing. There's also a whole collection of material that would be great for use in geography lessons, particularly the high definition footage of Africa.
