Compound Words

A compound word is a word that is made up of two other words.

For example foot + ball gives us football.

The two words must be words in their own right, so you can not have words like Beaut + iful for beautiful.

Task One

Look at these words. How many compound words can you make by putting two together to make a new word? There are lots of different possibilities to find out.

Hint: A dictionary might help.

Example Pea + hen becomes Peahen (a female peacock)

Tea
Fish
Pea
Spoon
Ship
Nut
Cup
Dust
Pay
Table
Light
Phone

Hand
Moon
Tele
Bag
Hen
Graph
Board
Moor
Scope
Star
Land
Box

Task Two

How many compound words can you think up yourself?

Make a list like the one in task one showing clearly the two words you have used to make the compound words you have found.

Extension

Choose ten of the compound words and put them into sentences.

Can you make all ten sentences relate to the same theme? For example, all the words could be put in sentences about animals or school.
