Multiplication Facts: Working from what you know

(Using known facts to derive new facts)

You will probably know a lot of the answers to these questions without using the multiplication facts on the sheet. However you must show how you can use the information on the sheet to reach the answer to each question.

Section A

Use the multiplication facts given to work out the answer to the questions. Remember to record your working.

  1. 3 ´ 2 = 6. 4 ´ 2 = 8.
  2. What is 7 ´ 2 ?

  3. 2 x 8 = 16. 3 ´ 8 = 24.
  4. What is 5 ´ 8 ?

  5. 4 x 7 = 28.
  6. What is 8 x 7 ?

  7. 3 x 5 = 15.
  8. What is 6 ´ 5 ?

  9. 3 x 8 = 24.
  10. What is 9 ´ 8 ?

  11. 4 ´ 6 = 24
  12. What is 6 ´ 8 ?

  13. 2 ´ 9 = 18.

Section B

Build up the answers to each question using the multiplication facts given only. You’re not allowed to use any other multiplication knowledge!

How could you work out the answers to each of these questions if you couldn’t recall the answer? Show how you could work out the answer from a known multiplication fact.

Take a pack of digit cards. Remove the 0 and deal out the cards so you have…

Can you rearrange the three cards to produce a bigger answer? What is the biggest answer that you can make with the three cards that you’ve drawn?
