Circus Maximus

(Idea contributed by Bob Smith)

Bob writes: 'This is a wonderfully simple running activity that children of all abilities enjoy.

Mark out a circle of 30-40 metres diameter with cones. Put children into 2 groups of 4-6. Put the groups on opposite sides of the circle. The groups then run in the same direction (anti-clockwise). If a child is over-taken by a member of the other team that child has to retire into the centre. This continues until there are no runners left in one of the teams.

The beauty of this race is founded on the fact that both sprinters and longer distance runners have an equally important role to play but at different times of the race.'
