The Demon Headmaster
By Gillian Cross

David Holmes (of Burpham Primary School) has sent in a great set of activities for this Gillian Cross book. Helen Lundy has contributed one of her worksheets. Any more ideas or material based on this book would be appreciated.

'The Demon Headmaster' Study Guide

The plot and text of the book is, of course, ©Gillian Cross

Task:
Chapter 1 & 2
A new child, your age, is coming to live with you. What would you feel/think? What would you tell them about life in your house?
Use Helen Lundy's sheet to record Dinah's opinions of the characters she meets on her first day at school.
Chapter 3
Write a code of conduct for the playground at this school. Write a 6 question test for a child your age. Swap with partner and do each other's quizzes. Mark.
Chapter 4
Design a handbill advertising a hypnotist who is coming to your town.
Chapter 5
Write about your earliest memories in as much detail as you can.
Chapter 6
Write a list of things you don't understand. Suggest some possible answers/solutions.
Chapter 7
What types of behaviour add up to bullying and how should each be punished?
Chapter 8
"Playing anywhere on school premises is most strictly forbidden". Think up some equally ridiculous rules for life outside school.
Chapter 9

"Sooner or later, he's going to want to do something with his army." What are the advantages to the headmaster of hypnotising all his pupils?

Chapter 10
Write the "Register of Rules".
Chapter 11
"She felt more lonely than she had ever felt in her life." Draw a colour picture of loneliness.
Chapter 12
Devise a plan to stop the Eddy Hair show coming to the school.
Chapter 13
Draw a map of the school, its grounds and show where the teachers, prefects and lorries have been trapped. Include the boilerhouse where the Headmaster finds them.
Chapter 14
If you could hypnotise people, what would you get them to do and why?
Chapter 15
What is the Headmaster going to say? Write his speech.
Chapter 16
What do you think this country would have been like if the Headmaster's plan had worked?
---
Review the whole book. Summarise the whole story in three sentences. Write a sentence about each main character, summing up what sort of person they are. Say what you particularly liked and disliked about it, giving reasons and lastly, give the book a mark out of ten overall.
