Chapter One - The Christenings

Focus: Using textual evidence
Activity: What do we know about Mr Ruggles? - Use text. Work in pairs. Write a biographical piece on the Ruggles family.

Chapter Three - Kate is Eleven Plus and Minus

Focus: Sequencing events
Activity: What was the sequence of events which led to kate losing her hat? Write a script of what might have happened when she got home!

Chapter Four - The Gang of the Black Hand

Focus: Planning and writing a story
Activity: Write an adventure so that you could present it at the next meeting.

Chapter Six - The Baby Show

Focus: Persuasive writing
Activity: Design leaflet and poster to persuade the people of Otwell to enter their children.

Chapter Eight - What Mr Ruggles Found

Focus: Journalistic writing
Activity: Write a newspaper report on Mr Ruggles and the money

Chapter Nine - The Cart Horse Parade

Focus: Modelling exercise
Activity: Use the descriptions of the family as they went to the railway station to draw them (loads of detail given in text).

Chapter Ten - The Perfect Day

Activity: Write a letter to Charkie and Ivy thanking them for a lovely time in London.
