THE UTTER ZOO ALPHABET

This is a great activity that you can use during Literacy sessions when your range is poems. I've done this with several classes and they've really enjoyed it. The activity is based on the poem 'The Utter Zoo Alphabet' by Edward Gorey. You'll need to get hold of a copy of the poem before you can use the picture. The poem features in Quentin Blake's 'The Puffin Book of Nonsense Verse' (ISBN 0-14-036660-1).

It starts,
The Ampoo is instensely neat,
Its head is small likewise its feet.

The object of the activity is for the children to match the monsters mentioned in the poem with the corresponding monster in the picture.

Thanks to Leon Cych you can access a PDF version of the picture by CLICKING HERE.

The PDF files also features some additional monsters. I used these to inspire the children to write their own two line verses about their own monsters. They loved doing this and we ended up with a huge book of poems about their monsters for which they produced some excellent illustrations.

You can see a presentation of our monsters by click here
