Year 1 Poetry Ideas Ideas contributed by Elizabeth Garner
"These ideas for poetry writing with Y1 children cover the Literacy objective T13 (from Y1 term 2) to substitute and extend patterns."
1. Use the poem 'Jump or Jiggle' by Evelyn Beyer to write their own animal poem.
JUMP OR JIGGLE Frogs jump Caterpillars hump. Worms wriggle Bugs jiggle ..etc.
JUMP OR JIGGLE
Frogs jump Caterpillars hump.
Worms wriggle Bugs jiggle
..etc.
Ask the children to make a list of new animals and movements. They can then choose to put them together to make a list poem, not necessarily rhyming.
[Note: Evelyn Beyer's poem is not given in full here due to copyright. You will need to get hold of a full version yourself]
2. Use the poem 'Bibblibonty' by Rose Fyleman to practise nonsense words.
BIBBLIBONTY On the Bibblibonty hill Stands a Bibblibonty house; In the Bibblibonty house Are Bibblibonty people; ..etc.
BIBBLIBONTY
On the Bibblibonty hill Stands a Bibblibonty house; In the Bibblibonty house Are Bibblibonty people;
Get the children to substitute new nonsense words for Bibblibonty.
