Alastair
writes: 'A game I have used with Year 1 pupils to try
to reinforce their geographical vocabulary and their understanding
of some physical geography terms: The game is based on the old
party favourite "The Captain's coming" Pupils mime actions to
verbal prompts as previously demonstrated by the teacher:
- Rushing
river - pupils run around the room (all in the same direction!)
with arms outstretched.
- Volcano
- children jump up in the air and make exploding noise.
- Mountain
- children stand on tiptoe with hands forming a triangle shape
above their heads
- Desert
- children crawl along the floor
- Sea
- children form a line and run forwards and backwards with arms
stretched downwards imitating the actions of waves
- Earthquake
- children shake their whole body and drop to the floor
- Tornado
- children hold arms up and spin around on the spot
- Forest
- pupils join into groups of five and stand with arms outstretched
pretending to be trees
None
of this is exactly rocket science but my class enjoyed it and
it could easily be extended or you could hold up pictures of the
relevant scenes instead of calling out the words. Hope someone,
somewhere finds this useful!'
