Counting in Twos
Idea contributed by Christine Kirton

Christine writes: "The numeracy strategy for reception recently called for the children to be taught to count in twos. Here are a few ideas which proved very popular with my class.

Water tray; Noah's Ark and a selection of matching animals!

Sand tray; Drawings of paw prints, laminated and buried in the sand for the children to find and put into pairs.

Buckets, moulds and spades in matching pairs to count and put away.

A washing line tied to high jump stands filled with pairs of socks to match.

Graph paper provided with two different coloured crayons to create a repeating pattern. After a week of reinforcement everyone could count in twos, the more able children being given a hundred square for differentiation."
